Here is a good switch key from the Bessemer & Lake Erie Railroad. It is stamped B&LE in block letters on its bow. On the other side is stamped serial number 2853 and maker name ADLAKE.
This is a good key with attractive golden color. It appears to have not been used, and it likely may be New Old Stock that was ordered but escaped being issued.
Our only criticism is that the B&LE stamping is light. The end of the barrel and overall surface are a bit rough with some foundry marks still showing.
Headquartered in Homewood, Illinois, the B&LE is descended from the Pittsburgh, Bessemer & Lake Erie Railroad Company that was founded in 1897 by Andrew Carnegie to haul iron ore and other products from the port at Conneaut, Ohio on the Great Lakes to Carnegie Steel Company plants in Pittsburgh and the surrounding region. On the return trip, Pennsylvania coal was hauled north to Conneaut Harbor. The B&LE was created in 1900 largely out of a series of small predecessor companies. It is still operating in northwestern Pennsylvania and northeastern Ohio. Its main route runs from the Lake Erie port of Conneaut, Ohio to the Pittsburgh suburb of Penn Hills, Pennsylvania, a distance of 139 miles. Rail operations were maintained continuously by various corporate descendants on the growing system that ultimately became the B&LE in 1900. In 2004 B&LE came under the ownership of the Canadian National Railway (CN) as part of CN's larger purchase of holding company Great Lakes Transportation. B&LE is operated by CN as their Bessemer Subdivision.
