This Baggage Car Cellar key is from the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railway, the direct predecessor of the later and better known Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacific Railroad.
It is a fantastic key with attractive stamping CM&STPRR on one side of its bow and BCC on the opposite side. It has just the right amount of use showing, but there is no "finger polish" wear on the letters.
An early incarnation of the line called "Milwaukee Road," the CM&StP started up following an 1874 merger and ran until 1928, when it merged with another railroad and the resulting line was renamed Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacific. This key, with its straight tube barrel, almost certainly dates from the very early 1900s, rather than the 1800s, but any relic from the older operation is difficult to find - particularly a specialized type of key.
Our Knous price guide shows a CM&StPRR BCC key with the exact same cut, but that one has a maker mark and a tapered barrel, valued at $225 -$250. We have tried to price ours accordingly.
