Here is an early dining car badge from the Union Pacific Railroad. It is a celluloid pinback with an early straight pin closure, and is eye-catching and beautifully bright displaying the Union Pacific Railroad's red white and blue shield logo. This badge would have been worn by a waiter or steward serving over-the-rails passengers eating in a dining or grill car. Old photographs show them worn on the upper left side of usually white uniform jackets.
This is a quality piece made by Whitehead & Hoag (which was in business between 1892 and 1959.) Being celluloid (not plastic) and having a simple loop catch instead of a safety catch, we believe it dates from the earlier part of the 1900s; definitely before the 1950s.
CONDITION is lovely: There are only some VERY light surface marks on the face, expected from use and hard to see. There are NO chips, flakes, cracks or splits. The colors in the UP shield are as strong and bright as ever. The pin is securely fastened on the back, as tight as ever, and the clear celluloid has only very slightly darkened from age.
This would be a terrific addition to display with a setting of Union Pacific dining car items!
