Here is a cast brass socket type wrench (or key) that was made to work with signal boxes along railroad tracks, protecting them from being tampered with. It is cast solid brass. We have shown it operating a standard signal box lock. This WRRS made lock is for sale separately (our item 9.601).
This wrench operates locks made with six-sided (hexagon) shape pins -- for which keys are significantly harder to find for than the much commoner triangle configuration. It DOES NOT work in locks with triangular shaped pins.
CONDITION is excellent, with NO cracks, chips, splits or other metal damage and good, solid casting. It does have the appearance of being a bit crude with a rougher surface than many, but that has never affected its durability performance.
IMPORTANT - PLEASE SEE OUR PICTURES - this key works just fine with the six-sided pins, but it was made in a "shield" shape that we have not seen before (two sides meeting at an angle and then round the rest of the way). HOWEVER, the angle catches the pin strongly and it operates a hexagonal lock perfectly.
The only markings on this key are deeply stamped 17 68. We have no idea what that represents. There is no maker mark.
