This brass switch key is stamped M&BR on one side of its bow. On the opposite is stamped ADLAKE. This key is from the Meridian & Bigbee Railroad, which started up in 1926. One with an identical cut but newer, being made by Keline, is shown in our Johnson book.
With little or no use, the key is "New Old Stock" - ordered by the railway but never used. It is an attractive color with no damage, a good, solid, heavy key that would add to any collection of southern USA switch keys.
The M&B Railroad (reporting mark MNBR), modern incarnation of the Meridian & Bigbee Railroad, is a Class III railroad that operates 189 miles of railroad from Meridian, Mississippi eastward to Burkville, Alabama. Additionally, the M&B has trackage rights over CSX rail from Burkeville to Montgomery, Alabama. Its headquarters are in Meridian.
The M&B was chartered on December 24, 1926. Construction advanced eastward to Cromwell, Alabama in April 1928, and finally to Myrtlewood, Alabama where it connected with the L&N in 1935. In 2003 the M&B took over the former Louisville & Nashville line from Myrtlewood to Selma, Alabama and the former Western Railway of Alabama line from Selma to Burkville. The railroad operated with steam locomotives until 1953. Now owned by Genesee and Wyoming Inc, the M&B gained publicity in 2007 when a train hauling parts of the Space Shuttle solid rocket booster derailed on an overloaded bridge weakened by heavy rains.
