What a powerful patriotic design - a majestic Bald Eagle atop an American Flag. This decoration is a Victorian die cut, "floating" over the richest, deepest, darkest-imaginable cobalt blue backing.
How beautiful worn at the neck as a brooch ! or on a lapel or centered on a stand-up collar. Or add it to a fine collection of these scarce and unique pieces.
Condition is as good as these can be found: The brass backplate is a full 1-3/4 inches across, firmly secured beneath a fully half-inch thick, crystal clear glass dome. A simple hook pin is welded on the back - no safety catch. There are a few small discolored spots and light scratches on the back from age and use, but nothing worse. There is no cloudiness or scuffing on the glass.
If you look extremely carefully with a magnifying glass, you may see a few tiniest sparkles of "silver" showing in the transfer -- actually proof that it it authentic.
Pins like this originated in the later 1800s, when ladies determined that the decorative pieces on the bridles of their horses and ponies were so pretty, similar pieces would be beautiful as jewelry. This started a trend, with pieces made for harness converted into brooch style pins, and then being manufactured directly for jewelry. Helping to more closely fit bridle straps on a horse's head, bridle rosettes have existed for thousands of years. According to legend, these decorative images were originally created to ward off evil spirits that were thought to attack the horses and their owners.
