This big plate is from the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacific Railroad - the famous "Milwaukee Road," which operated in the American Midwest and Northwest from 1928 until 1986. It is one of the more difficult pieces to find in the CMStP&P's beautiful "Peacock" pattern -- a service plate.

At 10-1/2 inches across, service plates were meant for show, not for eating. They were used amid blazing-bright silver and sparkling glassware to create a luxurious, awe-inspiring display for passengers entering the dining car. Once diners were seated, waiters would whisk the plates away and proceed with the meal.

Our plate is lovely with an exotic, intricate center full-color painting of a brilliant peacock amid jungle foliage and flowers. It is in extremely nice condition with NO chips, cracks, flakes or repairs. There are a few light utensil marks on the surface, only visible when you tilt it in bright light to find them. (Someone apparently did use it for dining, after it left railway service.) The outer rim is graced with an impressed scallop design, set off by medium blue.

Only Syracuse China made this pattern for the Milwaukee Road, from the 1920s until 1969. This plate is correctly stamped on the underside with the Syracuse Econo-Rim marking and a date code of 1-GG (January 1952).

IMPORTANT COLLECTOR NOTE: Peacock china was never marked with any railroad identification, as railroad china books state, but it is absolutely authentic; railroad use is well documented. It is an "exclusive pattern," an arrangement between the Milwaukee Road and Syracuse China that this specific pattern would be made and sold only to that single customer. However, the agreement apparently applied ONLY to Econo-Rim ware with the center bird and (important) the outer rim blue scallops. Syracuse China produced other types of ware incorporating the peacock design without the blue trim.
