Galloping out of a creamy off-white background, this spirited galloping horse and rider are a Victorian die-cut made as a bridle rosette brooch style pin. At 1-5/8 inches across, the clear artwork is an eyecatcher.
From his upright posture and jacket, this appears to be a military gentleman, likely an officer with a plumed hat -- but maybe not, because he is carrying a riding crop, not wearing a cavalry saber. If you tilt this in bright light, you can see a very few, very fine scattering of silvery flecks in the die-cut that are NOT visible from straight on.
Condition is exceptional for its age. The glass is crystal clear with no scratches, scuffing or chips. The brass metal backing is tightly secured. The metal has age darkened attractively. There is just the lightest small surface bump and several spots of discoloration. (We do NOT clean or polish our brass pieces!) .
This pin has antique mounting with original holes in the back plate made for a pin, rather than having been converted from a harness decoration. The pin safety catch and hinge rise up through the holes. It works, but needs extra care fastening the safety catch. If you want to wear it, a jeweler should adjust it to be a bit looser, but for a collection it's absolutely fine.
