Wonderful with a rich, deep cobalt blue background that absolutely glows in the light, this is an older bridle rosette originally made for a horse or pony harness and later converted into jewelry for a horse loving lady or girl to wear.
At 1-3/4 inches across, it is imposing and a great conversation starter!
A Victorian era transfer die-cut encased in a 1/2-inch tall glass dome mounted on a brass backing, this is an older conversion that is now a lovely large brooch style pin perfect on a high collar, stock-type tie or scarf.
Seeming to float over the blue is a high stepping white horse, pulling a two-wheeled carriage called a Gig. The driver, whip in hand, is mounted high over the tall wheels. This die-cut is in excellent condition with no damage.
The glass dome is in extremely nice condition with no scratches, scuffs, chips or cracks. It is mounted securely onto a brass metal backing. On the back, a long pin with a safety catch is now firmly affixed, opposite round "scars" where an original D-shape ring was attached.
Bridle rosettes, also called bridle buttons, were invented almost at the beginning of when horses became domesticated and harness was used to control them. Their original purpose was to secure bridle straps more snugly on an animal's head. Over time they became more decorative, until creative people realized they could be converted to jewelry and other functions. Since then, they have not only been converted, but deliberately made for jewelry and not the stable.
