This is a terrific fancy PRRCo castback lock and key set from the Pennsylvania Railroad -- both marked with the FRAIM keystone logo. The lock is further marked 1903.
THE LOCK has darkened to a wonderful deep, rich umber color. It is solid brass, and a gorgeous display with a strongly defined PRRCo in intertwined letters on the heart shaped back panel. On the shackle is stamped a large keyhole shape logo with the name FRAIM inside it. Stamped across the logo is the year 1903. This lock is in fine working condition and responds immediately to the key. The internal spring is very strong: the dust cover resists being pushed away from over the keyhole and snaps back sharply when released.
There are light surface bumps and dings from use and age, but nothing worse.
THE KEY is a knobby style with a matching FRAIM keystone logo stamped on one side of its bow and P.R.R. on the other in thick, serif Roman letters. It works extremely well with the lock, but sadly there is no way to know if these are the original pair that left the factory together. This key has darkened to almost the same color as the lock. It has just the right amount of wear showing: the bit edges and barrel end are just lightly worn smooth. There is just the slightest wear on both sides of the "bracelet" around the upper barrel -- this is usually from rubbing against adjacent keys on a ring. Please note there are many shallow dings/bumps on the top of the bow on the logo side, but this is cosmetic and has no effect on anything else.
