This terrific switch key is from the Buffalo, Rochester & Pittsburgh Railway, which served serving communities from the shore of Lake Ontario to the center of western Pennsylvania between 1885 and 1932.
It is marked BR&PRY in block letters on one side of the bow. On the other is stamped serial number 11925, the letter S (for switch) and the Adams & Westlake oval mark that was used in the earliest 1900s. Its heavy bit incorporates a full 90-degree dog leg, and it has a wide barrel to accommodate a large pin.
With good strong stamping (including an unusually legible A&WCo. / Chicago oval hallmark) it will be a prize in any collection. The color is an attractive deep golden chestnut. There is just the right amount of use, with the bit and barrel ends nicely rounded. There are a few areas of slight surface discoloration (darkening) and a little bit of verdigris here and there, adding character and interest.
