This platter is a very hard to find relic from the Buffalo, Rochester & Pittsburgh Railroad, which operated in western New York and Pennsylvania between 1885 and 1932.
The pattern name is Safety Slogan, which includes a top logo in deep olive green. Both our railroad collector books rate Safety Slogan at 4 out of a possible 5 stars.
Made by Mayer China, it is bottom marked for George W. Davis & Co., Rochester, the company that would have procured dinnerware for the BR&P. Our "Restaurant China Vol.2" (Conroy) dates the Mayer mark to approximately 1920-1930.
Size is 8 inches wide and just over 11 inches long. It is a stunning display with strong color and a crisp, sharp box logo. There are NO cracks, chips, flakes or repairs. There are marks all over from light surface use that are not seen unless you tilt the plate in bright light. The ONLY fault we can find is age spotting around the rim, but this does not show from a front or top display.
The BR&P was primarily a coal hauling operation, but when it originated passenger service it offered the best travel experience. Dining car memorabilia is difficult to find and prized by collectors.
