TWO AVAILABLE* : A majestic peacock, surrounded by an intricate floral design in full color, looks out from the center of this pretty oval dish from the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacific Railroad -- the famous "Milwaukee Road." A blue scallop decoration around the rim adds a finish touch.
The pattern name is "Peacock," first ordered by the railroad in the late 1920s and used until the 1960s. This oval bowl is called a "baker" from its shape -- perfect for holding a baked potato, but it could double as a side dish for vegetables or fruit.
Size is approximately 3-1/2 inches by 6-1/2 inches long and 1 inch deep.
Condition is superb - wonderful, brightly colored decoration and absolutely NO chips, cracks, flakes or repairs. Incredibly, this dish is very near mint with few if any marks from use -- surprising because its date code R-1 translates to January 1937 !. This bowl is correctly bottom marked by its maker Syracuse China. Peacock dishes never carried any kind of railroad identification.
* IMPORTANT - We have TWO available - as close to TWINS as any china can be ! Order both and we will discount your purchase a full 12% !
COLLECTOR NOTE: Despite having no railroad markings, "Peacock" dishes with the center bird and blue scallop trim on white base ware are genuine and authentic Milwaukee Road relics. This is what is called an "Exclusive" pattern: Syracuse China contracted to produce and sell this design ONLY to the railroad. HOWEVER! the railroad apparently had rights ONLY to the bird with the blue scallop edge design! Identical peacocks on pieces with different edge decorations are NOT railroad china.
