Not quite an antique - this beautiful blue plate with highly detailed artwork is one of the very first order commissioned by the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad to celebrate its 100th Anniversary year, 1927. It is the prized Centenary pattern made by Scammell China in their higher grade Lamberton ware.
This is a dinner plate, a full nine inches across. Condition is extremely nice with no cracks, chips, flakes or repairs. The intricate blue and white resembles flow blue. There are marks on the top surface from use, that can be seen if you tilt the dish in bright light.
The design on this plate focuses on Harper's Ferry, West Virginia. Around the rim are cameos of B&O Railroad power, from the earliest horsecar in the 1820s to the massive Lord Baltimore steam locomotive in 1925. On the back a large shield appears. outlining major achievements in the B&O beginning with the 1827 approval of its charter.
Just under the shield is the Scammell marking and the words PATENT APPLIED FOR, which dates this plate to being among the first production made. Later orders of dinnerware would carry the words DESIGN PATENTED.
