This adorable little baker dish was made for the Loon Lake House resort hotel in northern New York state, a prestigious destination for locals and elite clientele, alike.

An oval approximately 4 inches wide by 5 inches long by 1 inch high, it would have been used as a "baker" for a baked potato, or perhaps as side dish for vegetables.

On the top in dark green, the coat-of-arms for the Loon Lake House is surrounded by a thin line. Even as small as it is, the details are crisp and clear.

The bottom marking identifies it as made by the Iroquois China Company of Syracuse New York sometime between the 1940s and early 1960s, according to our "Restaurant China Volume 2" (Barbara Conroy). The date code E-2 is useless, Conroy explains, because the year to which Iroquois assigned the letter "A" is not known, but "2" likely means February, the second month.

CONDITION is extremely nice. The ONLY fault we can find is a pinprick size glaze pop in the well. There are virtually no marks from utensil use. To see any, you must tilt it in bright light and look very hard! There are NO cracks, chips, flakes or repairs. The glaze is bright, strong and shiny. The green is strong and details are sharp.

The Loon Lake House was one of the most prosperous resort hotels in the northern Adirondack Mountains, sought out as a refuge especially by well-to-do and highly prominent citizens seeking to get away from the "real" world. Constructed so it would overlook the waters of Loon Lake, the four-story, 31-room structure was built in the later 1880s in the Town of Franklin, New York. Many prominent and wealthy people of that time period, including three U. S. Presidents, vacationed there. The beautiful mountain region attracted artists, poets, writers, musicians and architects, among others. Unfortunately, the Loon Lake House was destroyed by fire in 1956, but memories and artifacts remain.
