This adorable little butter pat plate is a great find for any railway china collector. It is from the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacific Railroad, the famed "Milwaukee Road," in its long-loved pattern called Traveler.
Condition is extremely nice with no cracks or chips, no flakes and no repairs. There are a few very light surface marks but you must tilt it in bright light to notice them. Best of all, it is bottom marked with the sought-after black "The Traveler / Designed Especially for Milwaukee Road Dining Car Service" wording around the silhouette of a Canada Goose. Most Traveler pieces did not carry this full railroad backstamp.
A single goose, symbolizing the dependable, fast travel of which the Milwaukee was proud, wings its way in the center, with hand-painted black trim adding the finishing touch. This individual piece is especially attractive in richer, deeper pink than many, covering most of its surface. You can just see the tip of a pine tree at the 5-o-clock position. Impressed rim scallops authenticate that this is a piece of Syracuse China's Econo-Rim ware., invented in the 1930s specifically for onboard dining car tables.
Headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, the Milwaukee Road operated from 1928 through 1969, across the USA's midwestern and northwestern states.
