Here is a very nice Baltimore & Ohio Railroad brass lock and key set, with matching B&OLSTA markings. Dating from the earlier 1900s, they work extremely well together and would be a fine addition to any railway collection.

The lock was made by the Dayton Manufacturing Company of Dayton, Ohio. It is heavy brass that has darkened to a deep chocolatey brown with golden tinges shining through here and there . It is stamped B&O L. STA. in a panel on one side of the dust cover over the keyhole, and DAYTON MFG. CO on an opposite panel. It is in excellent working condition, extremely nice for its age. It has a thick, round shackle. The dust cover is very strongly sprung: it resists being pushed aside to admit the key and then snaps back sharply when released. The clevis pin is molded out of the back panel, with its tip going through the front face panel of the lock. Several lengths of old steel chain are attached, likely original.

PLEASE NOTE: There are several small dents along the very edges of the lock, and there is a shallow depression on the base of the shackle where it must have rubbed against something for a considerable amount of time.

The key is a rich, golden color. It is attractively stamped B&OLSTA in tall, serif Roman letters on one side of its bow. On the other side it carries the SLAYMAKER manufacturer stamp. It shows "just the right amount" of use, with no damage to the metal.

The only "issue" we can point out in either padlock or key is a depression on the top surface of the lock's dust cover (SEE OUR LAST PICTURE). This is just cosmetic, with absolutely affect on anything except appearance.

Similar locks and keys are pictured in the book "Locks & Keys: Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, B&O Chicago Terminal RR, B&O Express, B&O Southwestern RR & RY, Columbus & Newark Division" by David W. Robinson.
