This terrific lockset from the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway's Mechanical Department includes the original key ! which is very hard to find with this type of padlock.
Made by the Yale & Towne Company, it's a great set in perfect working condition.
As you can see, MADE FOR C & O MECH.DEPT. is stamped into one side of the lock body above YALE that appears in raised letters. Visually appealing black pebbled background beautifully sets off the design. The brass has darkened attractively with age.
See our photos of both the lock and key: Both are stamped with the serial number 145854 . We are not sure what the GD stands for - it may reference a division.
The shackle is stamped MADE IN U.S.A. on one side, and THE YALE & TOWNE MFG. CO. on the other (although the first few letters on that side are worn off, apparently from use).
This heavy, well made set weighs just over 13 ounces before packing.
A terrific addition to any railroad lock and key collection, especially one focusing on Mid-Atlantic memorabilia.
Headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio, the C&O operated from 1878 until 1987 through the states of Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, New York, Ohio, Ontario, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin, and the District of Columbia.
