This is an attractive key from the Colorado & Southern Railway. It is stamped C&SRY in block letters on one side of its bow. On the other side is stamped the maker name ADLAKE. Note, this is the LARGE version that was used from approximately 1919 to the 1940s.
The color is a beautiful deep golden brass.
Just the right light amount of wear on nicely rounded the bit and barrel edges. NOTE this key is rubbed on the top of its bow, that's just cosmetic.
A similar key with the same marking and bit cut is shown in the Knous "Railroadiana: Official Price Guide."
Per WIKIPEDIA: The Colorado & Southern began as the consolidation of bankrupt railroads in 1898. The Colorado Central Railroad and Cheyenne & Northern Railway were brought together in 1890 to form the Union Pacific, Denver & Gulf Railway. When Union Pacific went bankrupt in 1893, the CCR and C&NRY were separated from the UP and in 1898, merged with the Denver, Leadville & Gunnison Railway and others to form the Colorado & Southern Railroad. In 1908, the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad bought control of the C&S. The end came when it was merged into the Burlington Northern Railroad in 1981.
Of note is that C&S was the parent company of the Fort Worth & Denver Railway, which ran from a connection at Texline south and east into the state of Texas. The FW&D was established as a separate company because Texas law required that railroads operating within its borders must be incorporated within that state.
