Here is a gorgeous cup and saucer set from the Southern Pacific Railroad. It is the full coffee or tea size, in heavy restaurant weight ware. The thick, short diner style mug rests snugly in its saucer, nearly impossible to spill even on a jouncing train.
Made by Syracuse China, BOTH pieces carry the sought-after bottom mark: "Prairie Mountain Wildflowers / Made for Southern Pacific Lines / By Onondaga Pottery Co. Syracuse, N. Y. The green mark designates the "Econo-Rim" style of ware invented for railway use.
CONDITION: Very near Mint. IF this set was used, it was only a very, very few times - we cannot find any signs of use.
The Southern Pacific chose the floral decoration specifically because the flowers could be seen by on-board diners as they looked out the train windows: California Poppy, Baby Blue Eyes, Mariposa Lily (on the saucer) and Farewell to Spring (on the mug) artfully depicted in strikingly lifelike colors. This pattern was so loved by travelers it was used from 1931 through the 1950s.
