PLEASE NOTE -- FOUR ARE AVAILABLE: A great gift that would be fun on any baseball fan's dining table! (Go ahead and use them, but we recommend hand washing!)

This terrific dinner plate carries the logo of Harry M Stevens -- the pioneer of the concession business at American baseball games.** It is a beautiful plate, high quality white base ware with teal decoration. A crisp, sharply detailed coat of arms includes a letter S in a shield, flanked by rearing lions. It would have been used in a better concession where food was served restaurant style; or it could have been used in a restaurant setting catered by Harry M Stevens, Inc.

Made by highly regarded Shenango China, it is correctly bottom marked with a black Native American Indian stamp, and the words Rim Rol and Wel Roc, The number B-21 is Shenango's date code for production during the last half (July-December) 1963.

CONDITION is extremely nice: Bright white and striking blue-green, with NO cracks, chips or repairs. There are a few surface marks from utensils but you must tilt the plate in bright light to see them.

SIZE is 9 inches across, a standard dinner plate size.

** BACKGROUND: Harry M. Stevens (1856–1934) has gone down in history as the most important concessionaire in American baseball. (He also is given credit for inventing the hot dog.)

In 1887, he founded a stadium concessions company in Cranbury, New Jersey, named Harry M Stevens Inc. A pioneer selling food and baseball related items to patrons who attended ball games, his company endured for 107 years until it was acquired by Aramark in December, 1994.

Harry Mozley Stevens was born in Derby, England in 1856. He emigrated to Niles, Ohio in the 1880s. He soon became obsessed with baseball and quickly made his mark by designing and selling the sport's first scorecard - a design still in use to this day. By 1900, Stevens had landed contracts to supply refreshments at several Major League ballparks across the United States. He also began to sell scorecards to fans with the phrase “You can't tell the players without a scorecard.”

As for inventing the hot dog, Stevens is credited with telling the story that at the home opener of the New York Giants on a cold April day in 1901, there was limited demand for ice cream. Always creative, he decided to sell German sausages known as 'dachshund sausages.' When the kitchen staff ran out of the waxed paper on which the sausages were traditionally served, Stevens had one of his employees purchase some buns to hold the sausages instead. Reportedly, a cartoonist recording the event was unable to spell the word “dachshund” and wrote “hot dog” instead. Our understanding is that the Stevens family acquired and preserved the original cartoon.
