Here is a good working example of a Norfolk & Western Railway fancy castback lock and key set. The pair work smoothly together.
The key is almost certainly older than the padlock. It is stamped N&W on one side pf its bow in tall, graceful Roman style serif letters. On the opposite side is stamped serial number 11045 in equally large letters. There is no maker mark. It has great patina and color. It does show wear from use but NO thin metal and NO splits or chips in the barrel. "Finger polish" has also worn the bow stampings, but it's obvious what they are.
The lock is stamped 1941 (the date) on its shackle. It is a beautiful display with good strong raised N&WRYCO set off by a pebbled background. There is no maker mark. It has a good internal spring: the dust cover over the key hole resists being pushed to the side to admit the key, and then snaps shut hard on its own when released. The steel clevis pin and loop are original, attached to a short length of correct chain.
IMPORTANT: Please see our pictures with the blue V . The clevis loop is split straight across just below the tail of the lock on the keyhole side. This could be repaired, but it is damage we want to point out, and we have set the price accordingly. Please realize this will not show for display and will not worsen unless the lock is handled carelessly. Also, the chain will not come off the lock.
This set would be a fine starter for a beginning collector, or a good trader.
