This is a terrific, very old lock and key from the Pennsylvania Railroad. The heart shape lock is an antique with an intertwined PRRCO on its back, accompanied by a correct knobby key with a straight bit cut. They work very well together !
THE LOCK is so dark from age it is almost a black coffee color. Smidges of bright brass along edges under the rich patina sparkle here and there. On the keyhole side, the maker name SLAYMAKER is stamped on the shackle. It is faint from wear but it is definitely there. The internal spring is strong: the dust cover resists being pushed aside to admit the key and then snaps back sharply on its own when the key is removed.
THE KEY is large and attractive with little knobby bumps on each edge of the bow. It is stamped PRR on one side of its bow and on the other is stamped serial number 2933 and the letter K. There is also a Fraim Keystone maker logo stamped, dating it to around 1900-1920 era, a bit younger than the lock.
These old PRRCO locks are increasingly hard to find in good working condition. This pair would be a fine addition to any railway padlock collection !
