Here is an "Excelsior" padlock from the Norfolk & Western Railway with a different "R" marking. The maker was the Corbin Cabinet Lock Company of New Britain, Connecticut, despite there being no maker mark on this individual lock. We know it is Corbin because below a strongly marked N&WRR, there is a trademarked design: an arrow passes through the letters XLCR , well known as belonging to Corbin.
We are not sure what the "R" stands for - possibly a Norfolk & Western division or department (such as Roadway ) .
On the bottom near the keyhole are three Patent dates: 11-5-07, 12-24-07 and 4-13-09 . There are all over surface bumps and dings from honest use. Unfortunately, we do not have a key.
There appear to be remnants of old paint here and there - we do NOT clean our locks or keys. It would brighten up a bit if you wished to polish it lightly. This would be a fine addition to any N&W collection.
