Vintage Mid-Century 1950s Lane & Co. Poodle Dogs TV Lamp
This poodle dog TV lamp from the mid 1950s era is absolutely striking! An eye catcher in shades of black on a pair of white china Poodles, it stands firmly and soundly on its own.
At first look, it is hard to tell that it is not a beautifully made figurine! A factory artist skillfully airbrushed the curly "fur" to accentuate the Poodle clip and give it "texture". The dogs are so typical of poodles as a breed -- obviously fun loving and ready to play, with the sweetest looks on their faces!
This lamp is one of the more sought after ones made by Lane & Co. of California, an important and desirable maker of American television lamps, which could be used as true lamps or as night lights when equipped with a smaller bulb.
CONDITION is lovely, with NO cracks, chips, flakes or repairs. There is light allover glaze crazing expected in this type of ware (does not show unless you look closely). The light socket is as tight as ever in the ceramic, and the switch works perfectly. The wiring is original. This is an Underwriters Laboratories approved fixture, the original seal is still on the light socket, complete with the manufacturer name LANE & CO. There is no signature impressed into the china.
SIZE is an impressive approximately 10 inches tall and 15 inches long.
BACKGROUND: Lane and Co. 's mid-century TV lamps are some of the most highly sought after by collectors. The company started up in Los Angeles, California in the latest 1940s-earliest 1950s and shortly thereafter moved to a new location in Van Nuys, California, where they were located until going out of business sometime around 1960. Lane & Co. manufactured a highly creative variety of lamps to grace the tops of the large console televisions of the time. Adding to appeal were the obvious artistic talent, intricate designs and beautiful airbrushing techniques. Collectors soon began to acquire them, and interest in them has remained strong over the ensuing years.
IMPORTANT: The wiring in this lamp is a bit stiff but seems safe, HOWEVER it SHOULD BE REPLACED if you will actually use this lamp !!!
