This small oval platter from the Delaware & Hudson Railroad is in wonderful, nearly mint condition. The pattern is called "Canterbury," which was the standard in D&H dining cars through the middle of the 1900s. It carries a top "the D&H" script logo in a brown shield, substituted for one of the flower sprays in the rim design.
SIZE is approximately 5-3/4 inches by 8-1/4 inches.
CONDITION is beautiful. IF this was used, it had to have been only a very few times. There are absolutely no cracks, chips, flakes or repairs. The colors are bright and beautiful, and there are no glaze runs.
This plate is bottom marked with a correct Syracuse China maker marking. It is date coded 10-II (October 1954). There were never railroad markings on the underside of this pattern.
COLLECTOR NOTE: This design was a stock pattern that Syracuse China customized for the railroad by adding their top logo. In an unusual move, both Syracuse and the D&H used "Canterbury" as the name. Stock pattern pieces were made with "Canterbury" along with the maker's mark -- and some authentic D&H railroad pieces also were made with the name "Canterbury" in addition to the maker mark, but do not be fooled! Without the D&H shield logo, it is Syracuse China's stock pattern. If the D&H shield is not on it, it is not railroad !
