This is an antique drinking glass from the Delaware & Hudson Railroad. We believe that it likely was made for business car use or first class travel, and is older than the commoner Libbey glassware that was made the D&HRR.

SIZE is 3-3/4 inches tall, 2-1/2 inches top diameter. It holds approximately 6 ounces comfortably - typical water glass size.

CONDITION is superb -- a beautiful display with NO cracks, NO chips, NO flakes and NO repairs. The glass is bright and crystal clear - NO cloudiness, scuffing or "sick glass syndrome." The cut-in shield is sharp with no errors in the lines.

On the side, a "the D&H" shield logo is CUT INTO THE GLASS. If you drag a fingernail across, it will catch in the depression. The design is not etched on the side; it is not enamel. Also note the "hourglass" shape, narrower where your fingers fall when holding it, ballooning out toward the top then pinching in again toward a narrower rim.

The actual glass appears to be mold blown. There are telltale circular swirls in the bottom and more importantly, a shallow depression in the bottom center where a pontil apparently has been polished away. (A pontil is a telltale rough spot on the bottom of a piece of blown glass, usually in the center, where a rod used to hold the piece during manufacture was broken off after the piece was completed. Even with polishing, evidence of a pontil will remain, as it cannot be totally, completely removed)

This is NOT a Libbey product: It is noticeably thinner and more fragile, not thicker more resilient ware. There is no maker mark on the bottom --the Libbey mark is a raised scrolling letter "L." It has a standard rim -- the side simply ends, with no rounded "No-Nik" Libbey trademark rim.

We checked our "Sparkling Crystal" book (Paul) which does show some D&H glass items, but this style of glassware is definitely not included.

What else can we say? Please look at all the pictures ! If you are looking at a star for your D&H Railway collection, look no further!
