So pensive! .... We wonder what this little Mermaid is thinking about, resting so demurely on the edge of her water lily pool. We believe she dates from about 1900, and are calling her Art Nouveau style because we are not experts in that period.
Measuring a dainty 7.5 inches by 5.5 inches, and 2 inches from the tabletop to the top of her head, she is the perfect size for collecting the calling cards that would have been left by admiring suitors visiting a prospective sweetheart's home.
There is so much detail in this figure: water rippling gently over her scaly tail, that curls up and around the side of the pool; lithe body discreetly covering her breasts; her long hair in a coif. At each end of the pool, water lily flowers and pads rise up.
This piece is very heavy: it weighs over 1.5 pounds. We believe it is bronzed spelter metal. There is no maker marking, only a number 319 on the underside.
This is the perfect kind of an antique: you can USE it without harming it! It would be beautiful on a dresser or vanity for small items.
