This is a hard to find dressing accessory -- a curiosity from yesteryear -- a wonderfully made, wood box to hold the stiff upright collars that gentlemen used to wear. With its burly, solid "look" we believe this one was made to be a valet item for a gentleman.
This box obviously was created by a skilled craftsman. It takes maximum advantage of its round shape, with five wooden layers laminated to each other in a lovely pattern. The bottom and inside round collar support were turned from one solid piece; then individual round sections were added, row by row, to form the sides. The result is this beautifully patterned, laminated round box. The lid base was also crafted from one solid piece, with a sloping, six-section top affixed and a round lid topping it off.
We are not sure what kind of wood this is. There are NO knots, but the grain shows. The piece is SOLID and HEAVY -- weighing approximately 2 pounds (before packing).
DIMENSIONS: Just under 8 inches across the base, which is 3.5 inches high (outside). INSIDE it is just under 3 inches high, with the circular collar support being 2.5 inches across and 1.75 inches tall. The outside wall is approximately 3/8-inch thick. From table top to the top of the lid, is 4.25 inches.
CONDITION: Very attractive with beautiful wood grain and warm color, and an attractive patina. The lamination is SOLID and SECURE, with no gaps or loose areas. Both inside and outside, the sides are perfectly smooth. There ARE light surface bumps and dings from age and use. MOST NOTICEABLE: 1) On the lid you can see a half-inch piece inset into one of the pie-shape sections - it is tight and secure - an original filler or an old repair? 2) There is a small but noticeable, round bump (dark color) on one of the other top sections. (Both 1 and 2 can be seen in our last photo.) And, 3) There is a shallow bump into the very outside edge of the lid (turn this to the back for display).
Inside is very clean with NO cracks or chips. A past owner stored glitter in it> We have tried to remove all the glitter but a few flakes may remain. It has an inside aroma that is very pleasant, but is not noticeable unless you sniff the interior. We have cleaned and oiled it, but it would look fabulous treated to a good coat of tung oil or high quality wax.
