This is an extremely nice cup and saucer set from the Gulf, Mobile & Ohio Railroad. It is full coffee (or tea) size. The pattern name is "Rose," which was first purchased in the early 1940s and saw many years of service aboard the railway's dining cars.
Both pieces were made by Syracuse China and are correctly top / side marked with the GM&O wing logo. This pattern was never railroad-marked on the underside. The strong pink trim is a fine example of the airbrush or shadowtone technique for which Syracuse became famous.
The cup is date coded BB-9 for September 1947; and the saucer is date coded 3-DD for March 1949.
CONDITION is lovely -- eyecatching bright white ware with definitively strong pink decoration and crisp, sharp logos. There are absolutely NO cracks, chips, flakes or repairs. There are a few light surface marks from use and to see these, you must tilt the pieces in bright light.
A lovely matched set like this is very hard to find -- actually, "any" piece of G&MO Rose is hard to find, in any condition and we are thrilled to be able to offer this one!
