This china platter is from the Delaware & Hudson Railroad. In attractive teal blue on white base ware, the pattern name is Adirondack. It was made by the Syracuse China Company using their scalloped-edge shape called Morwel.

The bottom stamping is correct. The date code 5-G is Syracuse China's code for July 1976.

SIZE is approximately 10 inches long and 7.5 inches wide.

CONDITION is superb with almost no signs of use. You must tilt the plate in bright light to see any surface marks at all. There are NO cracks, chips, flakes or repairs. The glaze colors are strong with no blurs or runs, even in the tiny Great Seal of the State of New York which is depicted on the right side. On the left is "the D&H" script logo of the company that appeared around 1900.

The D&H first ordered Adirondack ware in 1973 for the commemoration of its 150th -- Sesquicentennial -- year of operation, using it aboard D&H passenger trains that they were continuing to operate after Amtrak began to take over American passenger rail service. "Adirondack" has the reputation of being the last actual chinaware purchased by a major railroad operation for on-board use.
