This is just the sweetest little platter from the famous "Milwaukee Road" -- which operated in American midwestern and northwestern states between Chicago and the Pacific Ocean. With forerunners beginning in the mid-1800s, the name was changed to Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacific after a reorganization in 1928.
Date coded August 1947, this platter is an authentic relic from the heyday of the CMStP&P's passenger operations. The Milwaukee prided itself on its passenger operations, providing the nation with some of its most innovative and colorful trains. The railroad's home-built equipment was among some of the best passenger equipment ever run on any American railroad.
The pattern is named "Traveler," depicting wild Canada geese winging fast and strong over mountains and pine trees -- a subliminal suggestion to passengers of the quality of train service they would enjoy. "Traveler" was first ordered in 1937 and used for many years aboard Milwaukee dining cars.
It is a wonderful example of the fades and color gradations in Syracuse China's lovely airbrushing technique that incorporated hand-painted black details, and a fine representative of the Econo-Rim trademarked line developed in the mid-1930s especially for use on limited space dining car tables.
CONDITION: SUPERB - Near Mint with extremely strong glaze, fabulous airbrushing and beautifully balanced 2-goose decoration. We had great difficulty finding any surface marks - IF it was used, it was only perhaps once? There are several tiny pen-point size depressions in the glaze surface that can't be seen unless you tilt it in bright light -- the way it was made. There are ABSOLUTELY NO chips, flakes, cracks, hairlines or repairs. The strongly impressed rim stamping adds a finishing touch.
SIZE: This oval plate is 6-1/2 inches wide by 8 inches long - a great collectible size.
Back markings include the correct Syracuse China Econo-Rim trademark and the date code BB8.
COLLECTOR NOTE: A limited number of Traveler pieces carry an additional bottom marking in black, identifying them as made for CMStP&P dining service. These pieces are more sought after and higher priced due to their scarcity, but ALL Traveler pieces are authentic, railroad-ordered dinnerware. It is well documented that they were made only by Syracuse China, which held an exclusive contract to produce them for the Milwaukee Road.
