Here is an absolutely wonderful child size Adirondack pack basket. It is about 50 - 60 years old, "Mid-Century" so it has some age. All original, it is made of split ash wood and comes with 1-inch cotton webbing harness for slinging it over one's shoulders. This type of basket was first used in the wilds of the Adirondack Mountains of upper New York state, made and used by Native Americans and fur trappers, hunters and fishermen. See below for more background.

SIZE: This basket is approximately 12 inches tall. The rectangular bottom is approximately 9.5 inches long and 6.5 inches across. The more oval top is approximately 10.25 inches long and 9.5 inches across. A small hand hold at the back is convenient for threading the webbing through. The rim is double wrapped for strength. Please see our second picture showing it beside a full adult size packbasket.

CONDITION: We can find NOTHING WRONG with this basket except for several splits on the ends of splints that were not tucked under; and a light stain on the bottom. NO broken splints; NO holes; NO misshapen areas. There are some rust stains and slightly worn places on the webbing from the metal adjustment slides, which have surface rust on them.

This would be a terrific basket to actually use, for decoration in a camp or cottage, or for a gift for someone special !

If you enjoy the outdoors, camping and hiking, you will enjoy the history and lore of these unique baskets, which are indigenous to the mountain wilderness of the 6-million-acre area now the Adirondack State Park. It is believed they were invented by the Algonquin people who inhabited the area. The original material of choice was black ash wood, prized for its durability, strength and suppleness. The distinct shape -- narrow top and bellied middle -- is incredibly utilitarian, lending itself to effectively carrying heavy loads of necessities for long stays in mountain wilderness, while the flat bottom is helpful for keeping the basket upright especially traveling in a canoe.
