This key is from the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad. It is brass and it's terrific! It has a choke-style barrel with rings. On one side of the bow is stamped B&O. On the other side is the FRAIM company's keystone logo dating it to the earlier 1900s. The edges of the bit are not quite sharp - it appears to have had some use but not much. The color is a lovely deepening golden.
IMPORTANT! -- An identical key is shown on page 56 of our "Locks & Keys: Baltimore & Ohio Railroad" book by David W. Robinson, where these are identified as Repair Track keys. Author Robinson is a long-time historian of B&O locks and keys. Despite not having an "RT" stamping we are confident because of this reference that this is a "repair track" key.
The cut is a straight cut -- from head on it looks like a lollipop with straight stem under a circle. Many "RT" or "rip track" keys had this type of cut. This is the first B&O key of this type that we have been able to offer. It would be a fine addition to any railway padlock and key collection.
