Vintage Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad China George Washington C&ORR Plate Platter
This sweet little oval platter is a great example of the "George Washington" pattern used by the C&O Railroad beginning in 1932. A full color cameo of the famous Gilbert Stuart portrait of the first President of the United States is gracefully set off by striking gold bands over ivory base ware.
The maker was Buffalo China in their Ye Old Ivory ware. It is correctly bottom marked, along with the additional bottom marking for the railroad.
SIZE is approximately 6.5 inches by 9.5 inches.
Condition is lovely with only a few surface marks that cannot be seen without tilting the plate in bright light. There are NO cracks, chips, flakes or repairs. The portrait is bright and clear.
The thick gold outer rim band is excellent, with only very minor rubs in a very few places. This gold band (found on all the pieces in this pattern) is high karat and very soft, and was applied as an overlay. Accordingly, it is extremely susceptible to scuffs and rubs.
IMPORTANT: This dish carries the correct bottom railway markings, but a previous owner clearly tried to scratch them off. Was this an employee who pilfered the plate from the dining department, or a passenger who slipped it into a briefcase and was afraid of being found out ? We can never know, but enough is left of the MADE EXPRESSLY FOR THE CHESAPEAKE & OHIO RR marking is left to be positive this is an authentic piece of railroad china.
