This is an exceptionally nice example of a Pullman Porter cap badge. It is very attractive with strong black serif style letters on a pebbled background.
The letters are stamped with raised edges, creating hollow centers that are filled with shiny black enamel.
CONDITION is lovely with only the very lightest surface marks from use. If you tilt it you can see a small "halo" like a shadow around each hole, which documents actual use on a hat. There are only a very few, tiniest flecks in the enamel (very hard to see without a magnifying glass). The badge retains its original arc shape and has not been flattened. The metal has taken on a soft dove gray color.
The Pullman Company rented actual rail cars to many railroad lines wanting the best passenger accommodations, and Pullman often provided staff along with the cars. A Porter was expected to assist individual travelers with whatever they needed boarding and riding the train. In depots and stations, Porters often wore special red caps so they would be easily seen and could be hailed to help with luggage and boarding. On the trains, Porters supplied concierge service, assisting with sleeping car and lounge car accommodations in particular.
