MORE THAN ONE AVAILABLE : Here is terrific little china platter from the Northern Pacific Railway. It is the "MONAD" pattern, with the round Yin Yang red and black top logo. It is very attractive in off-white base ware with a wide pastel green band around the rim edged by red-orange narrow bands. A dark green rings the very outer edge. The colors reflect those used decorating the NP's standard passenger cars.
SIZE: Approx. 5.75 inches wide x 7 inches long.
CONDITION - Absolutely NO cracks, chips, flakes or repairs. There are all over light surface marks from use - you must tilt the plate in bright light to see them. The colors are bright and the glaze is very strong. The logo is crisp and clear. SEE OUR PICTURES - there is some very slightest aging darkening around the rim.
The MAKER is Shenango China. On the bottom is their black Indian stamp, and it says PATENT APPLIED FOR. This is the correct marking - Monad dinnerware was never railroad marked on the bottom.
DATE: Our "Restaurant China Volume 2" (Conroy) book shows this marking and dates it being used from 1954 - 1963.
This is an interesting dish, the mold apparently is a version of Shenango's "Rim-Rol or Wel-Roc" dinnerware. The foot part of the bottom rim has a deliberate gap - see our pictures.
Monad chinaware was used by the NPRR for many years, made into the later 1960s. The colors represent those used decorating the standard passenger cars.
BACKGROUND: Around 1900, the Monad pattern was created by E.H. McHenry, chief engineer for the Northern Pacific, and Charles Fee, the railroad's general passenger agent. At the time, the railway was looking for a symbol to trademark, and the men were inspired by a design they encountered at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair. Per Wikipedia, in Chinese philosophy, yin and yang (陰陽 yīnyáng, lit. "dark-bright", "negative-positive") describe how seemingly opposite or contrary forces may actually be complementary, interconnected, and interdependent in the natural world, and how they may give rise to each other as they interrelate to one another.
