GIFT CONDITION: Any railroad buff would be pleased to have this tie clip -- an incredibly detailed miniature of "The 999," the New York Central & Hudson River Railroad's beloved, famous locomotive that set a speed record in 1893, surpassing 100 miles per hour not once, but twice.
You must use a magnifying glass, but EMPIRE STATE EXPRESS is clearly visible down the side of the tender, along with 999 on the side of the cab. Details this small are unbelievable - you can even see the spokes in the wheels! There is no maker mark - sad because of the quality.
In silvertone metal, this appears to be almost never used, possibly even unused. The metal is beautifully bright and shiny with deep sculpting of details. The alligator clamp type back is firmly affixed and works smoothly.
SIZE: The locomotive and tender are just under 2 inches long. The clamp on the back is approximately 1-1/4 inches long. This of course was made as a tie clasp, anchoring a man's necktie to the shirt below, but it can be clipped anywhere - use your imagination!
Fantastic for any true New York Central believer, or anyone who enjoys small tributes to American railway history.
