This difficult to find platter is the "Minuteman" pattern from the Boston & Maine. This custom pattern depicts a young American colonist with his musket, ready to leap into action against the British during the American Revolutionary War. "Minuteman" ware is very scarce -- the B&M ordered this china fewer than five short years from January 1927 to July 1931. This platter is dated 1929, making it "almost antique."
SIZE is approximately 12.5 inches long and 8.5 inches wide, which would be a fabulous display with smaller items in front of it.
CONDITION is extremely nice with NO cracks, chips, flakes or repairs. There are only a few lightest surface marks from use, that cannot be seen unless the platter is tilted in bright light. NO yellowing or darkish age spots. The Minuteman is wonderfully sharp and clear with great detail -- you can see his eyes and even his eyebrows! The blue floral band is crisp and pretty in deep blue and yellow, with no glaze runs.
IMPORTANT: "Minuteman" is called a custom pattern because Syracuse China inserted new artwork (the Minuteman figure) into a design named Kenmoor that they already had on hand, and even had copyrighted. They only "railroad marking" is the buckskin clad young man standing in a gap in the blue floral band. There is no mention of Boston & Maine.
On the underside, this dish carries the Onondaga Pottery / Syracuse China stamp and a date code 6-J for June 1929. Note there is no railway marking, which is correct. The word "KENMOOR" also appears underneath with "Design Copyrighted."
We are thrilled to be able to offer this rare platter in Minuteman, which is more often than not missing from most railroad china collections and would be a wonderful addition.
BACKGROUND: Called Minutemen because they could be ready at minute's notice, civilian colonists were para-military, mostly younger men who organized to form well-prepared militia companies. They were self-trained in weaponry, tactics and military strategies from the American colonial partisan militia -- and made up about 25% of that force. The Minutemen provided a highly mobile force able to deploy rapidly so that the colonies could respond immediately to war threats. They were among the first to fight in the American Revolution.
