This is a superb hat badge from the Central Vermont - either Railroad or Railway, we are not sure which, but either is one terrific find. Its previous owner was a respected Maine collector who owned it for approximately 30 years.
It is brass, attractive in a scrolled crown shape. We were delighted to find the faint "halos" around the holes, caused by fastener wear and documenting that the badge was actually used. The occupation is Conductor.
CONDITION is lovely. The metal is bright and a rich gold color with great patina. There are tiny surface marks here and there from use. This badge retains its original arc shape to fit across the front of the employee's cap or hat; it has never been flattened. The black fill in the letters appears to be original.
The only issue we can find -- hardly noticeable -- is that a little of the black has chipped out of the second "O" letter. We have left it as found but it could be restored if you wish with a tiny brush tip and glossy black enamel paint.
There is no maker mark on the back, but this is common with CV and other New England badges.
IMPORTANT: We can't be 100% positive if this is from the Central Vermont RailWAY or the Central Vermont RailROAD. Both are sought after by New England railway collectors, and relics from either are difficult to come by.
The origin of both the CVRR and CVRY was the Vermont Central Railroad, which was chartered in October, 1843. After numerous consolidations, leases and mergers that significantly expanded the area it serviced, the name was changed in November, 1872 to Central Vermont Railroad. Further mergers and reorganizations ensued, and in March, 1899 the line was reorganized as the Central Vermont Railway, which after twice surviving receivership, finally ended up owned by the Canadian National, which privatized and finally sold it in 1995.
