This is a very good brass switch lock and key from the Philadelphia & Reading Railroad. They are a good working set.
THE LOCK is brass, with fancy scrolled P&R intertwined raised lettering on a pebbled background. The word SWITCH is stamped into the shackle on this side. On the other side a partly obliterated maker's mark is stamped into the shackle. All we can make out is ___MMFGCO. We are making an educated guess that it is S&M, for Stuart & Mattson which was located in Philadelphia and a known maker of P&R fancy castback locks. The internal spring is strong: the dust cover resists being pushed aside and then snaps back sharply over the key hole when released. the clevis pin is free, and the clevis loop swings freely. The chain appears to be original.
THE KEY is brass and is stamped P&R on one side of the bow. On the other side is stamped serial number D4844 and a FRAIM keystone logo. The stamping is a bit light but it is all correct and accurate. The lock responds readily to the key.
This set would be an excellent addition to any collection of railway padlocks and keys.
