At 5 inches across, this adorable little dish would have been used as a side dish for an individual serving of fruit or vegetables not intended for the main dinner plate. It might also be called a monkey bowl. The maker is Syracuse China, using their Old Ivory ware.
CONDITION is lovely with NO cracks, chips, flakes or repairs. It is as close to mint as not-new china can be. The decoration is bright and sharp.
This dish is correctly bottom marked UNION PACIFIC DESIGN COPYRIGHTED. We are not sure if the dark circled number may be a plant code. The Union Pacific bright flag logo appears on the top rim directly across from a detailed depiction of an American Bison. The little sketches that run around the rim depict the winning of the American West and the coming of the railroad.
Originally called "Overland," the "Historical" pattern china was first ordered by the UPRR in 1927 for use aboard the Overland Limited, and then the Los Angeles Limited name trains. It was so popular that it lasted into the 1950s.
Quality pieces like this little dish are difficult to find.
