This striking after-dinner cup and saucer set focuses on a full color portrait of the first President of the United States, George Washington, replicated from the original painted by Gilbert Stuart.
Beautiful in slightly creamy color base ware and decorated richly with gold, this set was made by Syracuse China with their Old Ivory stock. The saucer is bottom marked appropriately. There is no marking on the cup. We are not sure if the CC3 mark on the saucer is a plant code. If it is a date code, it translates to March 1948.
CONDITION is excellent with NO cracks, chips, flakes or repairs and no age spotting. The colors in the Washington cameo are brilliant and intense. The only fault we can find is that there are some hard to see light surface marks on the gold. We would give it a rating of about 8.5 out of 10. They are not readily seen. You must pick up the piece and look. The gold is high karat and was applied as an overglaze, making it vulnerable to the slightest bumps.
History buffs know that this image of Washington is Gilbert Stuart's unfinished 1796 painting that is also known as The Athenaeum, his most celebrated and famous work. Sharp eyed shoppers will further realize that this image also appears on the $1.00 bill!
