Here is a great pair of irresistible pups - ! They were made by Hubley for paperweights or party favors, or just neat little pieces of "desk art."
They are solid cast iron. What expressions on their adorable little faces! complete with soulful eyes and mouths, and laughable fat round little behinds complete with stumpy tails! They're easy to tell apart, despite being very much alike. One has a red collar and the other has a blue-green collar.
CONDITION is very nice in all original paint with only minimal paint flaking. The original white has attractively darkened with age into a creamy color. There is "alligatoring" in the paint on the dog with the blue-green collar but not on the other. There are NO broken pieces, dents, twists or repairs. The underside of one appears to have the paint worn off but of course that is not important for display and it's not significant in any way.
NOTE the one with the blue-green collar has a bee or fly painted on his hip (and looks like he's trying to see it!) - we've seen others and apparently this is factory painted. I do not know the significance, other than it is someone's idea of being cute.
From their cute round faces, pushed in noses, stub tails and black and white markings, the factory artists probably modeled their canine figures after Boston Terriers or another small bulldog type breed of the time.
These two ragamuffins would be an awesome start to a collection of these pint size pipsqueaks. While researching we found numerous variations - wouldn't it be fun to own a kennel full ?
