We are delighted to offer this superb soup bowl from the New York Central Railroad's famed 20th Century Limited train service. It is in wonderful condition, beautiful and ready to display.
This is a "coupe" bowl with a rolled rim and upright rather than low sides. It is 7.5 inches across and the rim stands approximately 1.5 inches tall. The pattern is "NYC-2a Century" per "Dining on Rails" by Richard Luckin. Dining car ware for use aboard the 20th Century name trains was a combination of white and gray. This variation is white base china with gray decoration and no rim bands. or stripes. It was purchased for the streamlined equipment of the late 1930s.
Correctly marked on the back, made by Buffalo China, Design Copyrighted, Made Expressly For New York Central. We are not sure what the extraneous numbers represent, but this is the absolutely authentic mark for this dinnerware.
CONDITION is lovely with NO cracks, chips, flakes or repairs. There is just a little use showing with light utensil marks in the well but you must tilt the dish in bright light to see them. The glaze is strong and shiny. There are just the very slightest marks on the gray transfer.
Please look at our pictures - the little stands used in the kiln to keep the piece off the oven floor left noticeable scar marks on the underside of this piece, but they are cosmetic and not damage. Unsightly but they do not harm anything.
As collectors know, 20th Century Limited china is difficult to find and sought after. We're thrilled to be able to offer this fine example!
