This big dinner plate is a fine example of the "Glory of the West" pattern sought after by Great Northern Railway collectors. It carries the desirable blue circle mark in addition to the standard Syracuse China Company marking. The airbrush design reflects what onboard dining car passengers might see out the train windows, traveling through Glacier National Park.

SIZE is 9.5 inches across

CONDITION is extremely nice with only light use. You must tilt the plate to see surface utensil marks. There are NO cracks, chips, flakes or repairs. The color fades and airbrush technique in the design enhance the mountain goat, pine trees and mountain lake in the background.

On the underside, the blue circular mark specifically identifies this plate as "GOTW" dinnerware. The black Syracuse China Company mark affirms it is their Econo-Rim line. The Y-9 date code means this particular plate was manufactured in September of 1944.

Interestingly, of all the Glory of the West pieces, only the dinner plate and the ash tray carry the image of the mountain goat, which became the mascot of the railroad.

The Great Northern was an American Class I railroad running from Saint Paul, Minnesota, to Seattle, Washington, with branches that ran north to the Canada–US border in Minnesota, North Dakota, and Montana. It also had branches that ran to Superior, Wisconsin, and Butte, Montana, connecting with the iron mining fields of Minnesota and copper mines of Montana. Emerging in 1889 from a merger, it was the northernmost transcontinental railroad route in the U.S.A., and the only privately funded – and successfully built – transcontinental railroad in U.S. history. No federal subsidies were used during its construction, unlike all other transcontinental railroads. After a long and glorious history, in 1970 the Great Northern Railway merged with three other railroads to form the Burlington Northern Railroad.
