This is a wooden egg carrier made by the Star Egg Carriers & Trays Company, John Elbs, of Rochester, New York, in the early 1900s. Designed to hold one dozen (12) eggs, it was intended to be returned to the company for reuse.

We are including four antique blown glass eggs, as shown. (One has gold paint on it, that could be removed if desired, we are leaving it "as found." NO cracks or damage! These eggs are from about the same era as the carrier.

SIZE is 8.25 inches long by 6.5 inches wide and 2.75 inches tall. There are four runners on the underside, raising the bottom so points of the eggs can't touch the surface underneath.

This box was made for commercial use, to be discarded when it became too worn -- so the craftsmanship is ordinary and practical. All four corners are dovetailed. The original wire handle rests in a groove, and can be slid the entire length of the box to get all the eggs out.

There are ownership markings in black paint, as well as stamped-in impressed markings, on all four sides. Due to age and wear-and-tear, they are difficult to read. The wood has darkened considerably and has never been finished with shellac or varnish. There is a white spot (old paint) on one end - we are leaving it "as found" but it can be painted over dark if you choose.

Inside the box the original pasteboard (light cardboard) dividers mostly remain. They show some wear and scuffing from use. The dividers across the center have slots into which cross pieces fit. IMPORTANT: One corner piece of pasteboard is missing, SEE OUR PICTURE please.

We believe these dozen-size carriers were made available to customers either by the farmer himself, or at the grocery market, to carry eggs home safely. This would pre-date the molded containers we use today. A deposit may have been charged to ensure they would be brought back!
