These are made of "pasteboard" lightest cardboard, intended for a single use before they were discarded. There may be some marks or light stains or a short tear at the edge of a slot, but any of these are few and MINIMAL. They are "new - clean," with NO storage odor and NO stains, rips or tears. Sharp, clear printing in bright attractive colors adds eye appeal.
These eggs were marketed by the Forst Packing Company of Kingston, New York. Forst also sold butter and meat products including well known "Forst Formost" pork sausage. What better place to advertise than on their egg cartons?
On the underside, it states these cartons were manufactured only by Egg-Safety Carton Corporation of New York City. We looked up the Patent Number USRE19143 and discovered that it was issued in April 1934. The inventor, Leon Benoit, had filed for the patent in 1927, calling his invention a "knock down carton."
IMPORTANT - these have been stored away, FLAT, but were never used! The design is simple -- but it's much easier if TWO people work together to make up the carton. SEE OUR LAST TWO PICTURES: With the printed side up, PULL the edges outward, away from the center. As you pull, the inside dividers will begin to raise up. Turn the carton over (as in our last picture) and CONTINUE PULLING, lining the tabs up with the slots. Keep pulling GENTLY, pushing the divider tabs where they belong. Once you have finally pulled and inserted, fold the tops down into the middle of the carton (Picture #7 with the yellow V). Then gently push and squeeze until the carton is correct shape with all the tabs poking through.
