This terrific passenger coach or caboose key is stamped ARR in impressive block letters on one side of its bow. There is no maker marking.
At just under 4 inches long with appealing color and patina, this would be a fine addition to any railroad key and lock collection. The bit edges are just barely not quite sharp - it appears to have seen limited use.
We can't be positive as to which railway the "ARR" refers. There are numerous possibilities and no records for this type of key. Immediate guesses include the Alaska Railroad, which was assigned AAR as its reporting mark by The Association of American Railroads . (The AAR assigns marks to all carriers, under authority granted by the U.S. Surface Transportation Board, Transport Canada, and Mexican Government.) Other possibles include: Alton, Allentown, Altadena and Ashburnam, among others.
