GN in strong block letters is stamped on one side of the bow of this key from the Great Northern Railroad (or Railway, we cannot be certain which). It is stamped ADLAKE on the other side.
This is a fine big key just under 4 inches long. It is solid steel with NO rust or other metal problems.
The bit edges are quite sharp, so it appears to have had little, if any use.
This one would be right at home in any good lock and key collection focusing on the northern Midwest and Pacific Northwest.
BACKGROUND from Wikipedia: The GN existed from 1857 until 1970, running along the "roofline" of the continental US through the states of Minnesota, North Dakota, Montana, Idaho, Washington, Oregon, Wisconsin, South Dakota, Iowa and California and the Canadian provinces of British Columbia and Manitoba. Headquartered in St. Paul, Minnesota, it was built in stages westward to the Pacific. It was the only privately funded – and successfully built – transcontinental railroad in U.S. history. In 1970 the Great Northern, together with the Northern Pacific Railway, the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad and the Spokane, Portland & Seattle Railway merged to form the Burlington Northern Railroad.
